What is packaging?

Packaging is a product made of any material used for the containment, protection, handling,delivery or presentation of goods throughout the life cycle of those goods, from raw materialto finished goods and from the producer's hand to the consumer. Single-use packaging usedfor the same purpose shall also be considered as packaging.

Packaging protects goods in transit from the producer to the consumer, helps to preserve the characteristics of the product, enables goods to be transported and stored in an economically viable way and facilitates handling. Packaging also protects goods from harmful environmental impacts and, in the case of some goods (e.g. chemicals, petroleum products, detergents), the environment. The packaging provides information on the composition, shelf life and manufacturer of the product it contains, as well as other relevant information (e.g. hazard labelling and instructions for use) to help the purchaser make choices and handle and use the goods correctly and safely. Packaging also plays an important role in the presentation and advertising of goods (Ministry of Climate Change).
